Most people seem to value style over substance... witness the popularity of Britney Spears, reality television, and plastic surgery. It just doesn't make sense. How did we get to the point where form was more important than functionality?
That doesn't mean that I consider style to be irrelevant, however. Applied judiciously, style can enhance substance. Style can smooth rough edges, ease discomfort, and aid understanding. The key is to ensure that style does not become distracting, or an end in itself.
Style without substance is like whipped cream... light and airy, sweet to the palate, but ultimately unfulfilling. Substance without style is like a diet of pure fibre... heavy, gritty, and leading to excessive bowel pressure.
So, I've revamped the site to add a modicum of style. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of substance yet, either. I'll be remedying that condition over the coming months, always with these words as my banner, my call-to-arms:
You can't polish a turd, Beavis. - Butthead
